Purified water is a vital raw material in the cosmetics industry, used extensively in product formulations, equipment cleaning, and packaging processes.

In fact, purified water often makes up more than 70% of the total content in personal care products such as lotions, creams, shampoos, toners, and serums. Because these products are applied directly to the skin or hair, water quality is directly linked to product safety, stability, and consumer experience. Regulatory bodies such as the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur), United States Pharmacopeia (USP), and GMP guidelines require purified water used in cosmetics to meet strict microbiological and chemical purity standards. This includes low conductivity (typically below 1.3 μS/cm at 25°C), low TOC (≤500 ppb), and an absence of pathogens like Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli.

To meet these standards, cosmetic manufacturers rely on advanced purified water systems that integrate multiple filtration stages. The process begins with pre-treatment, including sand and activated carbon filters to remove large particles and chlorine. This is followed by water softening and reverse osmosis (RO) to eliminate dissolved salts and heavy metals. For microbial control, systems are equipped with ultraviolet (UV) sterilizers, ozone generators, and 0.2-micron precision filters. Some systems also include EDI (Electrodeionization) or dual-pass RO to produce even higher purity water. All components are made of sanitary-grade stainless steel (SS304 or SS316L), and the entire system is controlled via PLC with real-time monitoring for parameters like pH, flow, and conductivity.
